Success Story:

Three years ago Interlake Soccer decided to hold its first Interlake Soccer Development Day, a single-day event that would bring all of the coaches and officials in the league together to improve and enhance their skills; the focus wasn’t on certification, but on things that could be used on the field the next day. The first Development Day was a smash success, with over 60 participants in attendance.

In that first year, the Development Day utilized Month of the Coach funding, a grant from Sport Manitoba, as well as a grant from the Physical Activity Leadership Group (PAL) to fund the event, making it free of charge to the coaches and officials. The league’s board was so pleased with how the day went, it was decided that going forward that $3 of every player’s registration fee would go into a league account specifically for the development and certification of coaches and officials. The idea is to grow local capacity; instead of bringing a coach out for a one-day clinic for athletes, the focus is to train existing coaches to enhance the experience athletes will have over an entire season.

Without the Month of the Coach funding that initial Development Day would not have happened, and now that seed money has blossomed into a self-sustaining program to develop local coaches and officials.
